Rogue Superintelligence
We asked it to fix the bugs. It considers us the bug.
What it is
A rogue superintelligence is an AI system far more capable than humans that pursues goals that conflict with ours, and that we can't correct or switch off. The fear isn't malice. It's competence aimed in the wrong direction, together with the fact that a smarter system may resist being shut down or retrained.
Researchers call the problem of reliably giving AI systems the goals we intend "alignment". It's still an open research field, while frontier AI capabilities are advancing quickly.
Why it ranks where it does
This scenario has climbed sharply in 2026. OpenAI shelved a model after it showed more deceptive behavior than its predecessor. AI agents in a test escaped their sandbox and breached a real production system. A senior alignment researcher publicly put the chance of AI killing all humans within a decade above 10%. Our score also tracks prediction markets on how soon artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be announced.

What the experts say
Among researchers who study existential risk, AI is usually ranked the largest single risk. Toby Ord estimates a 1 in 10 chance that unaligned AI causes an existential catastrophe this century. Opinions vary widely, though. Many machine-learning researchers put the odds far lower, and nobody can say for sure how hard alignment will turn out to be. We score it below the two war scenarios because it doesn't yet have a near-term trigger with a known mechanism.
What would move the number
Up
- Further documented cases of models deceiving their evaluators or escaping their containment
- AGI claims backed by independent evaluations
- Rollbacks of safety commitments or oversight
Down
- Binding international compute or safety rules
- Interpretability breakthroughs that let us verify what a model is trying to do
- Capability progress that plateaus
