Alien Invasion
Independence Day, but they have better lawyers.
What it is
Alien invasion is the Independence Day ending: a technologically superior civilization arrives and takes over the planet. It's one of the oldest end-of-the-world stories in science fiction, going back to The War of the Worlds in 1898.
Why it ranks where it does
In 2024 the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) reviewed decades of government UFO records and found no verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial technology. We track a prediction market on whether the US will confirm that aliens exist, but even confirmation wouldn't mean an invasion. We score the invasion, not the existence of life.
Evidence on the board
- Zero confirmed visitors. UFO file releases are about records, not invasions.
What the experts say
Astronomers think microbial life elsewhere is plausible, and the search for it is active. Interstellar travel at scale faces huge energy and time barriers, though, and no signal from another civilization has ever been confirmed.
The movie vs. reality
In Independence Day, giant saucers park above the world's cities and a computer virus saves the day. In reality, any civilization able to cross interstellar distances would have energy and technology so far beyond ours that the film's war wouldn't be much of a contest. Interstellar distances also cut the other way. Radio leaking from Earth has only travelled about a hundred light-years, a tiny bubble in a galaxy 100,000 light-years across. If anyone is out there, they most likely haven't heard us yet.
What would move the number
Up
- A confirmed technosignature, especially one heading our way
Down
- Each AARO report that explains away more sightings
Live signals we track
The baseline above is set from the evidence as of October 13, 2026. On the live board, your browser adjusts it in real time using these feeds. Chatter can only nudge a score in proportion to its evidence, so attention alone can't make an unlikely scenario look likely.
