Engineered Bioweapon
Someone, somewhere, made it 'just to study it'.
What it is
An engineered bioweapon is a pathogen that's deliberately made more contagious, more lethal or harder to treat, and then released either by accident or on purpose. Unlike natural diseases, an engineered virus doesn't face the evolutionary trade-off that usually makes very deadly diseases spread poorly.
Why it ranks where it does
AI labs pledged new controls this month to monitor their models for biosecurity and chemical threats. That's a sign the industry believes AI could help someone design a dangerous pathogen. A BBC Future report notes that plague has been used as a weapon before, though outbreaks tend to stay contained. We follow a prediction market on a plague pandemic.

What the experts say
This is one of the risks that existential-risk researchers take most seriously. Toby Ord estimates a 1 in 30 chance that an engineered pandemic causes an existential catastrophe this century, more than 300 times his estimate for natural pandemics. We score it lower on the near-term board because no specific engineered threat has been reported.
What would move the number
Up
- Evidence that an AI model gave real help with weapons development
- Reported lab leaks or illegal programs
- Rollbacks of DNA-synthesis screening
Down
- Mandatory screening of DNA synthesis orders
- Strong biosecurity checks on AI models
- Better early-warning surveillance

The baseline above is set from the evidence as of October 13, 2026. On the live board, your browser adjusts it in real time using these feeds. Chatter can only nudge a score in proportion to its evidence, so attention alone can't make an unlikely scenario look likely.
