Mirror Life
Backwards bacteria that nothing on Earth can eat. Cool, cool.
What it is
Every living thing on Earth is built from molecules with a particular handedness. Mirror life would be bacteria built entirely from the opposite-handed versions. Immune systems, predators and drugs might not recognize them at all, so a mirror bacterium could in theory spread unchecked through people, animals and plants.
Why it ranks where it does
In December 2024, 38 scientists, including some who had worked toward building mirror organisms, published a warning in Science and called for the research to stop. Creating mirror bacteria is estimated to be 10–30 years away. None are known to exist, and several research groups have halted related work. The small score reflects a serious theoretical risk with no current hazard.
Evidence on the board
- Scientists have urged a halt to creating mirror‑image organisms. None are known to exist.
What the experts say
Biosecurity researchers describe mirror life as one of the rare technologies where the downside could be global and irreversible. That's why the scientific community moved to restrict it before it exists.
Could we survive it?
Scientists can already make mirror-image versions of some proteins and DNA in the lab, and those molecules are useful for drug research. The worry is a fully living mirror cell. Because predators and immune defenses rely on recognizing molecular shapes, a mirror bacterium might face no natural checks at all. Antibiotics designed for mirror chemistry could probably be developed, but the cautious consensus is that it's better never to need them.
What would move the number
Up
- Progress on synthesizing mirror-image components for a cell
- Research continuing without oversight
Down
- Formal international bans or funding restrictions
