Zombie Apocalypse
Attention spikes every October. Undead, still zero.
What it is
The zombie apocalypse is the staple of countless films, games and TV shows: a pathogen reanimates the dead or turns the living into violent, contagious hosts.
Why it ranks where it does
No known pathogen can reanimate dead tissue. The closest real thing is the Ophiocordyceps fungus, which takes over the behavior of certain ants. That's an insect problem, and the human body temperature is too high for most such fungi. Interest in zombies spikes every October, and our chatter signal will catch it. The guardrails keep that buzz from lifting a scenario with no evidence.
Evidence on the board
- No pathogen reanimates the dead. Cordyceps is strictly an insect problem.
What the experts say
Epidemiologists sometimes use zombie outbreaks as a teaching example. The US CDC once ran a zombie preparedness campaign to get people to build emergency kits.
The movie vs. reality
Modern zombie stories run from George Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) to 28 Days Later and The Last of Us, which swapped the classic virus for a mutated fungus. Some real infections do change behavior. Rabies makes animals aggressive and spreads through bites, and the toxoplasma parasite subtly alters rodents' fear of cats. But a fast-moving, bite-spread disease that also stopped its hosts feeling pain or needing food would burn out quickly, because the infected would be easy to see, spot and avoid.
What would move the number
Up
- A pathogen that causes aggressive behavior and spreads through bites (rabies already does this, but it's treatable)
Down
- Halloween ending
Live signals we track
The baseline above is set from the evidence as of October 13, 2026. On the live board, your browser adjusts it in real time using these feeds. Chatter can only nudge a score in proportion to its evidence, so attention alone can't make an unlikely scenario look likely.
