What it is

Global famine means food production or distribution failing across several regions at once, leaving hundreds of millions of people without enough to eat. Modern agriculture depends on fertilizer, diesel, stable weather and open trade routes. If several of those fail together, local shortages can turn into a global crisis.

Why it ranks where it does

Several stresses are hitting at once right now. Diesel and fertilizer prices have soared because of the Iran war, just as a strong El Niño threatens harvests. The WHO is also circulating a food-insecurity and malnutrition alert for Sudan. Famine is also the main way that nuclear war would kill most of its victims, so it's linked closely to the scenarios above it.

Evidence on the board

What the experts say

Researchers who model global food shocks stress that the world produces enough calories today and that most famines are caused by conflict and policy, not absolute shortage. A true global famine would need a major shock such as nuclear winter, simultaneous breadbasket failures or a collapse of trade. That keeps it below the top tier but well above the Hollywood scenarios.

What would move the number

Up

  • Failed harvests in several major exporting regions
  • Fertilizer and fuel shortages lasting into the 2027 planting season
  • Grain-export bans

Down

  • Reopened shipping through the Strait of Hormuz
  • A mild El Niño
  • Humanitarian access in Sudan and other conflict zones

Live signals we track

The baseline above is set from the evidence as of October 13, 2026. On the live board, your browser adjusts it in real time using these feeds. Chatter can only nudge a score in proportion to its evidence, so attention alone can't make an unlikely scenario look likely.
